SED To Develop ₹150 Crore 2G Ethanol Biorefinery At Wave Sugar, Dhanaura, Uttar Pradesh
Spray Engineering Devices Limited (SED) has received approval for ₹150 crore in financial assistance under the Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas's PM JI-VAN Yojana, routed through the Centre for High Technology, to set up a 91 KLPD second-generation (2G) ethanol biorefinery at Wave Sugar, Dhanaura, in Uttar Pradesh.
The project integrates biomass gasification with gas fermentation technology, combining LanzaTech's gas fermentation platform with Ankur Scientific Energy Technologies' oxygen-enriched biomass gasification process in a thermally integrated configuration. The biorefinery is designed to convert biomass-derived syngas into ethanol, with potential pathways for future production of green chemicals and sustainable aviation fuel intermediates.
SED Managing Director Vivek Verma said the project is intended to create integrated bio-industrial ecosystems that convert agricultural residues into clean fuels and green chemicals, describing it as part of the company's Smart Village vision for rural bio-manufacturing. Sukhraj Soni, Director – Biofuels & Green Chemicals at SED, said the facility combines thermochemical gasification with biological gas fermentation to create a flexible platform for ethanol and future renewable fuel production.
SED has more than three decades of engineering experience in the sugar and process industries and has been expanding into advanced biofuels and renewable energy through its Smart Village Initiative.
