The Delhi government plans to develop an approximately 61-kilometre road corridor along the Najafgarh drain to reduce traffic congestion and improve connectivity across the city. The Public Works Department (PWD) is preparing to appoint a private consultant to conduct a feasibility study and prepare a detailed project report, officials said. The project was first announced by the government in February 2026, with the Expenditure and Finance Committee giving financial approval at an estimated cost of ₹453.95 crore.

Under the proposed plan, roads will be developed along both sides of the drain from Chhawla to Basaidarapur, covering 27.415 km on each side for a combined stretch of 54.83 km. The corridor will comprise a paved, two-lane road approximately seven metres wide, with separate tracks for walking, jogging and cycling. A new bridge near the Dwarka Metro Depot is also planned to improve traffic movement along the route.

The corridor is expected to connect with several major roads including the Outer Ring Road, Inner Ring Road, Shivaji Marg, Pankha Road, UER-II, NH-9 Rohtak Road, and Najafgarh Road, providing an alternative intra-city route through outer Delhi and improving access toward the airport and Dwarka Expressway.

The project will also include landscaping and tree plantation along the corridor, along with construction of new boundary walls and repair of damaged ones where required. As the drain and surrounding land fall under the jurisdiction of Delhi's Irrigation and Flood Control department, the project had earlier received board-level approval from that department before receiving financial clearance from the Chief Minister-led committee.

Construction was earlier targeted to begin by May 2026 following tendering, with completion expected by November 2027; the current update indicates the feasibility and detailed project report stage is still underway ahead of the tendering process.
