MoPNG Approves ₹150 Crore Assistance for 91 KLPD Hybrid 2G Ethanol Biorefinery by SED in Dhanaura, Uttar Pradesh
The Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas (MoPNG) has approved ₹150 crore in financial assistance under its PM JI-VAN Yojana scheme, through the Centre for High Technology (CHT), for setting up a 91 KLPD Second-Generation (2G) Ethanol Biorefinery at Wave Sugar, Dhanaura, Uttar Pradesh. The project is being developed by Spray Engineering Devices Limited (SED) and is described as among India's first privately developed commercial-scale 2G ethanol biorefineries.
The biorefinery will use sugarcane bagasse and other agricultural residues as feedstock. Ankur Scientific Energy Technologies will supply its oxygen-enriched biomass gasification technology to convert the biomass into syngas, while LanzaTech will provide its gas fermentation platform to convert the syngas into ethanol. SED will lead the engineering, development and execution of the integrated facility.
The hybrid process combines thermochemical gasification with biological gas fermentation, creating a pathway for producing ethanol as well as future green chemicals and sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) intermediates from non-food biomass.
The project is positioned as part of India's push toward second-generation biofuel feedstocks that do not compete with food production, supporting the country's ethanol blending programme and broader energy security goals.
