Tata Power has outlined plans to invest approximately ₹300 crore to scale up its Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) capacity in Mumbai to 200 MW. The company has already commissioned two BESS units of 20 MW each and operates 150 MW of pumped hydro storage capacity in the region.

The storage expansion is part of a broader ₹15,000 crore transmission and distribution upgrade plan for the Mumbai Metropolitan Region over the next five years, announced by Dr Nilesh Kane, Chief of Transmission and Mumbai Distribution at Tata Power. The BESS capacity is planned to double from 100 MW to 200 MW by FY27.

The storage infrastructure is intended to store surplus daytime electricity generated from renewable sources and supply it during non-solar periods, helping bridge demand-supply gaps and enhance grid stability. This supports Tata Power's target of sourcing 70% clean energy by 2031.

The storage rollout accompanies other transmission upgrades, including a 400 kV ring network connecting Vikhroli, Dharavi, Mahalaxmi, Sewree and Trombay, a 765 kV link to Dolvi, and upgrades of eight existing 110 kV substations to 220 kV. These initiatives are aimed at meeting Mumbai's projected 40% rise in peak power demand, from 4,642 MW in 2026 to approximately 6,500 MW by 2031, driven by urbanisation, data centre growth, Metro rail expansion and redevelopment activity across the region.
