Punjab govt mulls setting up 66 solar power plants

Power Generation  -  Aug 08,2024  -

The Punjab government is exploring the development of 66 solar power plants, each with a capacity of 4 MW, according to Aman Arora, the state Minister of New and Renewable Energy Sources. In a recent meeting chaired by Arora and Power Minister Harbhajan Singh, senior officials from the departments of new and renewable energy, power, and the Punjab Development Commission discussed the project’s strategies. This ambitious initiative aims to significantly boost the state's clean energy capacity and is expected to generate approximately 390 million units (MU) of electricity annually.

The solar project, with a projected investment of around Rs 1,056 crore, is anticipated to yield substantial economic benefits. By implementing feeder-level solarisation, the state could save approximately Rs 136 crore annually on energy costs. Additionally, the project is expected to create numerous job opportunities for both skilled and semi-skilled workers, enhancing local employment prospects and stimulating economic growth in Punjab. This initiative aligns with the state's broader goals of increasing renewable energy usage and reducing reliance on conventional power sources.
