NTPC to Float ₹10,000 Crore EPC Tender for Nuclear Island at 2,800 MW Mahi Banswara Nuclear Power Project in Rajasthan
NTPC Limited is set to float an EPC tender worth over ₹10,000 crore for the nuclear island package at the Mahi Banswara Nuclear Power Project in Rajasthan, with the Notice Inviting Tender expected to be issued by June 15, 2026. The tender will cover at least two of the four planned 700 MW units at the project. A separate EPC tender for the turbine generator island is expected to follow by March 30, 2027.
The Mahi Banswara project is being developed by Anushakti Vidhyut Nigam Limited (ASHVINI), a joint venture between NTPC and Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL). The project comprises four units of 700 MW each, taking total installed capacity to 2,800 MW. The Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB) has granted excavation consent for Units 1 and 2, and the excavation package for these two units has already been awarded. Environmental and forest clearances are in place, and the design consultancy contract has been awarded.
NTPC management has indicated that the first concrete pour for the project is targeted for August 2027, with the first unit scheduled for synchronisation in November 2032. Power offtake consent for approximately 2,770 MW of capacity has been received from customers in Rajasthan, Gujarat, Chhattisgarh, and Andhra Pradesh. An equity infusion of ₹800 crore into ASHVINI was undertaken by the JV partners in January 2026.
Beyond Mahi Banswara, NTPC is separately pursuing nuclear power development through its wholly owned subsidiary NTPC Parmanu Urja Nigam Limited, with site-selection studies underway across 30 locations in multiple states. NTPC has signed MOUs with Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh, and the company is planning to set up at least two 700 MW units each in 14 states at an estimated cost of approximately ₹20 crore per MW, with a total outlay of around ₹28,000 crore to commission these projects through 2032.
