JSW Infrastructure Limited has received a Letter of Award from the Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port Authority (SMPA) for the integrated development of an outer container terminal at Netaji Subhas Dock (NSD) in the Kolkata Dock System. The project, awarded through a competitive bidding process, covers two berths and five berths at NSD and will be executed under a design, build, finance, operate and transfer (DBFOT) model on a public-private partnership basis. The concession period is 30 years.

The project will be executed in two phases and is expected to create a total container-handling capacity of approximately 0.93 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs). The award is aimed at addressing existing capacity constraints at NSD, improving berth productivity, and enhancing vessel turnaround times, supported by strong cargo demand from the Kolkata metropolitan region and its established hinterland.

This award follows an earlier Letter of Award received by JSW Infrastructure for the reconstruction of Berth 8 and mechanisation of Berths 7 and 8 at NSD, a project carrying an estimated capital expenditure of ₹740 crore with a capacity of 0.45 million TEUs, for which interim operations are expected to commence shortly. Combined, the two projects at the Kolkata Dock System will give JSW Infrastructure a total container-handling capacity of approximately 1.4 million TEUs at this port.

Across its broader container growth projects, JSW Infrastructure's total container-handling capacity is expected to scale up to approximately 1.8 million TEUs upon completion. The Kolkata expansion forms part of the company's stated strategy to progressively diversify into the container segment and increase its third-party cargo volumes across geographies. Investment size for the new outer container terminal concession has not been disclosed.
