NHAI Confirms November 2027 Target for ₹3,500 Crore Chennai Port–Maduravoyal 20.9 Km Double-Deck Elevated Corridor in Tamil Nadu
The National Highways Authority of India has confirmed that construction of the 20.9 km, four-lane double-deck elevated corridor from Chennai Port to Maduravoyal, being built at a cost of over ₹3,500 crore, is progressing and is scheduled for completion by November 2027. Originally initiated in 2010 but terminated in 2016, the project was restarted in 2023 following requests from the Tamil Nadu government and Chennai Port Trust, guided by a technical committee.
The corridor spans 20–21 km from Chennai Port Gate No. 10 near the War Memorial to Maduravoyal Interchange, travelling along the bank of the Cooum River until Koyambedu and then along the median of NH-48 to Maduravoyal. Of the total length, the stretch from Maduravoyal to Koyambedu (7 km) will have a single deck, while the remaining 14 km up to the port will feature a double-decker structure.
The lower tier is dedicated exclusively to local city traffic and features 13 strategically positioned ramps at key locations including Sivananda Salai, College Road, Spur Tank Road and Koyambedu to ease congestion along the Cooum River. The upper tier functions as a dedicated freight corridor, allowing heavy port-bound containers to travel directly to Chennai Port Gate-10 without interference from city traffic.
In a policy decision to ease urban commuting, the lower deck will remain toll-free for local traffic, while toll charges will apply exclusively to freight vehicles using the upper deck. Construction is currently progressing for 11 hours daily — five hours during daytime and six hours at night — with NHAI having requested the Tamil Nadu government and city police to extend work hours to up to 16 hours per day.
