Maharashtra Signs MoU for ₹6,066 Crore Mumbai Water Metro and ₹150 Crore Electric Boat Plant in Sindhudurg
The Maharashtra Maritime Board (MMB) and Zoya Marine Services Private Limited have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to supply vessels for the Mumbai Water Metro project and set up an electric boat manufacturing facility in Sindhudurg district. The agreement was signed at Mantralaya in the presence of the state's Minister for Fisheries and Ports, Nitesh Rane.
Under the MoU, Zoya Marine Services will supply environmentally friendly, technologically advanced vessels for the Mumbai Water Metro project, and will separately develop a state-of-the-art electric boat manufacturing facility at Talawane in Sawantwadi taluka of Sindhudurg district. The manufacturing facility will be built across nearly 22 acres with an estimated investment of ₹150 crore, and is intended to reduce dependence on imported vessels while supporting green maritime transport and advanced shipbuilding technologies.
The Mumbai Water Metro itself carries an estimated project cost of ₹6,066 crore and involves developing a 340-km network with 33 water routes and 44 terminals, along with procurement of 203 environment-friendly electric-hybrid vessels. The first phase is targeted to begin commercial passenger operations in December 2026, with the full project expected to be completed by 2031 and serve around 7.5 crore passengers annually.
Discussions between the parties also covered project implementation, technical collaboration, skill development and employment generation. Officials said the manufacturing facility is expected to strengthen Maharashtra's coastal industrial base and boost the maritime economy in Sindhudurg.
