Global firms to invest Rs 42,000 crore in green hydrogen hub in Tamil Nadu

Power Generation  -  Jan 30,2025  -

Tamil Nadu is set to become a major green hydrogen hub with a Rs 42,000 crore investment led by four global energy giants. Malaysia’s Petronas-backed Amplus Ganges Solar, Singapore’s Sembcorp Industries’ Green Infra Renewable Energy, India’s Acme Green Hydrogen and Chemicals, and ReNew Energy’s subsidiary ReNew E-Fuels are collaborating to advance India's green hydrogen goals.

The hub will be strategically located at VO Chidambaranar (VOC) Port in Thoothukudi, a prime location for renewable energy projects due to its infrastructure and port connectivity. This initiative aligns with India's goal of becoming a global leader in green hydrogen production, aiming to reduce reliance on fossil fuels and curb carbon emissions. The commissioning for the first phase of the project is planned by 2028.

With abundant solar and wind resources, Tamil Nadu is well-positioned to capitalise on green hydrogen, which is produced using renewable energy sources. Green hydrogen is seen as a critical component in India’s clean energy future, offering a sustainable alternative for industries such as steel, chemicals, and transportation.
