DPA ready to allot 600-1000 acres land for new Kandla airport

Automotive Industries  -  Aug 08,2024  -

The development of a new greenfield airport in Kandla, Kutch, is moving forward as the Deendayal Port Authority (DPA), which manages Kandla port, has granted in-principle approval to allocate 600-1000 acres of land for the project. This decision addresses the growing demand for improved air connectivity in the region, a need that has been recognized since 2019. The Airport Authority of India (AAI) has expressed readiness to fund the project, contingent upon the availability of suitable land, which DPA will provide on a 60-year lease at a nominal rate, given that it cannot sell the land outright. Several land parcels have been identified, and AAI will soon finalize the site for the new airport.

Currently, Kandla airport operates with limited infrastructure, handling only two 78-seater airplanes. Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, AAI had requested 300 acres of land for the airport's expansion, a figure that was later reduced to 178 acres. However, the initial expansion plans were eventually scrapped in favor of developing a new greenfield airport in Kutch. This new project is expected to significantly enhance the region's connectivity, supporting both economic growth and the logistical needs of Kandla port, one of India's major maritime hubs.
