NALCO Inaugurates Key Infrastructure Facilities For ₹5,677 Crore 5th Stream Expansion At Damanjodi, Odisha
National Aluminium Company Limited (NALCO) has inaugurated key infrastructure facilities as part of its 5th Stream Expansion Project at the M&R Complex in Damanjodi, in Odisha's Koraput district. The expansion is aimed at increasing the refining capacity of the Damanjodi Alumina Refinery by an additional 1.0 million tonnes per annum (MTPA), taking total alumina production capacity to 3.1 million tonnes annually from the current 2.1 million tonnes.
The 5th Stream project carries an estimated investment of ₹5,677 crore. NALCO has appointed thyssenkrupp Industrial Solutions (India) as EPCM Consultant and PMC for lump-sum turnkey packages, while the refining technology is being supplied by Rio Tinto Alcan International Ltd (RTAIL). As part of associated port infrastructure works at Visakhapatnam, an alumina silo of 25,000 MT capacity and a caustic soda tank of 5,000 MT capacity are planned to support alumina exports and caustic soda imports.
NALCO Chairman and Managing Director B P Singh, along with Director (Projects & Technical) Jagdish Arora and senior project teams, reviewed execution milestones, construction progress and overall project readiness during the site visit.
The 5th Stream expansion forms part of NALCO's broader capacity-building plan, which also includes a ₹1,961 crore project to develop the Pottangi bauxite mines and a separately planned expansion of its smelter plant and captive power plant. NALCO has indicated it is targeting Maharatna status, which requires sustained annual turnover above ₹25,000 crore.
