Karnataka plans Rs 650 crore for space, defence manufacturing park

Manufacturing  -  Nov 29,2024  -

Karnataka government has plans to incentivise investment with its space and defence manufacturing park, a public-private partnership (PPP) initiative estimated to cost Rs 600-650 crore.

The state aims at 50 percent of India’s space market through its space policy (2025-2029) while bolstering its deep-tech sectors, including space, defence, and advanced manufacturing.

The hub promises to generate high-value employment and tackle industry bottlenecks. As per the state’s space policy, “5,000 students and young professionals will be trained in specific global standards,” which will create specialised jobs over the next five years. The presence of key institutions like ISRO and DRDO has fostered a mature industrial ecosystem comprising domestic and global enterprises alongside emerging startups.

The Aerospace Park in Devanahalli will serve as the cornerstone for defence electronics manufacturing. “With the space policy, we want to focus on creating downstream applications of space tech; that is where the market is,” stated by Karnataka’s IT-BT Minister Priyank Kharge.

Ekroop Caur, Secretary of the IT-BT Department, outlined plans for an operational hub within 18-24 months.

She emphasised integrated facilities like common testing and simulation centres, which would reduce costs and expedite certifications. This initiative underscores Karnataka’s strategy to balance industry demands with infrastructural accessibility.
