JIPMER to Build ₹1,000 Crore Trauma Care and Organ Transplantation Centres at Sedarapet, Puducherry
The Government of Puducherry has formally re-allotted and handed over land at Sedarapet to the Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER) for the development of two new Centres of Excellence. The land, originally allotted in 2018 and later administratively revised in 2022, has now been handed over following renewed consultations.
The two planned facilities are a Centre for Trauma Care and Rehabilitation with an Air Ambulance Facility, and a Centre for Organ Transplantation, with a combined capital investment of nearly ₹1,000 crore.
The Centre for Trauma Care and Rehabilitation will be developed on approximately 25.4 acres within the Sedarapet campus at an estimated cost of ₹425 crore. It is planned with a capacity of 250 beds, including intensive care units, high-dependency units, dedicated trauma bays, emergency observation wards, rehabilitation services, and ten operation theatres. The facility will also include a dedicated helipad and air ambulance capability.
The Centre for Organ Transplantation carries a capital outlay of ₹550 crore and will have a planned capacity of 400 beds, including specialised transplant wards, intensive care units, high-dependency units, advanced diagnostic facilities, and fourteen operation theatres. It will support both deceased-donor and living-donor transplantation programmes across kidney, liver, heart, lung, bone marrow, and reconstructive tissue specialties, with an expected capacity of approximately 2,500 to 2,700 transplants annually once fully operational.
Both centres are intended to function as referral hubs for trauma care, transplantation, and related specialties for patients from Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, Kerala, Odisha, West Bengal, Bihar, and other parts of the country.
