Cabinet Approves ₹7,145 Crore Kanpur-Kabrai Greenfield Highway Project on BOT-Toll Mode
The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved construction of the 117.7-km Kanpur-Kabrai access-controlled greenfield highway at a total capital cost of ₹7,145.14 crore. The project will be implemented by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) under the Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT-Toll) model, and also covers operation and maintenance of the existing Kanpur-Kabrai section of NH-34.
The four-lane corridor is designed with provisions for future expansion to six lanes and will operate at speeds of 80-100 kmph. It forms a key segment of the Bhopal-Kanpur Economic Corridor under the National Highways Programme, linking Kanpur with Kabrai, Sagar, Bhopal and other parts of Madhya Pradesh.
The highway will connect with NH-34, NH-35, the Bundelkhand Expressway, Kanpur Ring Road, and state highways SH-46, SH-91, SH-10B and SH-42. It is expected to improve access to the Kabrai mining belt, aiding transport of minerals, industrial goods, construction materials and agricultural produce.
Aligned with the PM GatiShakti National Master Plan, the project will improve connectivity to 16 economic nodes, including the Unnao, Banther, Pankhi, Rania, Jainpur, Rooma, Chakeri, Sumerpur and Bhuragarh industrial areas, along with the Trans Ganga Integrated Township, Growth Centre Jaipur and Kanpur Nagar Node. It will also connect to rail hubs at Kanpur, Ghatampur, Hamirpur and Mahoba, and to Kanpur, Chakeri and Khajuraho airports.
The project is expected to generate nearly 1.2 crore person-days of direct and indirect employment during construction, and is projected to carry an average daily traffic of around 18,069 passenger car units by FY2028.
