Purabi Dairy, NDDB and Suzuki R&D India Sign MoU for Compressed Biogas Plant in Assam
North East Dairy and Foods Ltd. (NEDFL), which markets dairy products under the Purabi brand, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) and Suzuki R&D Centre India Pvt. Ltd. (SRDI) to set up a compressed biogas (CBG) plant in Assam. The MoU was signed on July 2, 2026, in New Delhi.
The proposed CBG plant will convert agricultural and dairy waste into compressed biogas and organic fertiliser. NEDFL, a joint venture between the Government of Assam and NDDB, will execute the project, operate the plant, and handle marketing and sale of the compressed biogas and bio-fertiliser produced.
Under the collaboration, NDDB will provide technical and institutional support for the project. Suzuki R&D India will invest in the project and will realise the associated carbon benefits arising from the resulting reduction in carbon emissions.
The project is intended to create an additional income stream for farmers by generating value from agricultural and dairy waste, while the organic fertiliser output is expected to support sustainable agricultural practices and soil health in the region.
Suzuki Motor Corporation is currently involved in nine biogas plants across India, with two already operational in Banaskantha, Gujarat, according to the company. The Assam project adds to this ongoing biogas program, which is linked to broader efforts by the governments of India and Japan to promote biogas adoption in the country.
