Adani Power to triple capacity of Kawai plant with Rs 18,000 crore investment

Manufacturing  -  Sep 05,2024  -

Adani Power plans to triple the capacity of its Kawai thermal power plant in Rajasthan, with an investment of up to Rs 18,000 crore. The expansion will lead to an increase in the plant's capacity from 1,320 MW to 4,520 MW.

The company is also setting up new plants and expanding existing ones across India as part of its strategy to double thermal power capacity. The current capacity of the plant is 1,320 MW, which will be expanded in two phases of 1,600 MW each, taking it to 4,520 MW over the next few years.

The company has already given a Rs 10,000 crore order to Bharat Heavy Electricals (BHEL) to execute the expansion plan.

To facilitate this, the company has forged domestic fuel tie-ups under long-and-medium-term contracts. For fuel assurance, the company has secured new power purchase agreement for 6,400 MW linking pre-assigned mines from state allocations. It also has the enhancement of fuel availability and cost control through commercial mining licences at advantageous locations.

The company has identified a development pipeline of 11.2 GW. Of the three projects of 1,600 MW each at Raipur, Raigarh and Mirzapur, the Raipur and Raigarh projects are brownfield expansions in Chhattisgarh at a cost of nearly Rs 10,000 crore, while the Mirzapur project in UP is a greenfield facility, being built by Adani Power subsidiary Mirzapur Thermal Energy (UP).
