Mitsubishi Chemical Group in Talks with West Bengal Government to Set Up Semiconductor Manufacturing Unit

Miscellaneous Jul 10,2026

Japan-based Mitsubishi Chemical Group is exploring investment opportunities in West Bengal's semiconductor sector, initiating discussions with the state government on setting up a manufacturing facility. Senior company representatives met state officials, including Industries Minister Tapas Roy, at the state secretariat in Kolkata, with a further round of talks and site inspections expected in the fourth week of July.

The state government has proposed Durgapur and Panagarh as preferred locations for the project, noting that the facility would require a relatively limited land footprint. West Bengal had earlier announced plans in its state budget to develop a semiconductor manufacturing facility in Durgapur as part of its broader industrial strategy.

Mitsubishi Chemical Group, which reported annual revenue of ¥3,704 billion (over $22 billion) in FY25, supplies critical process materials and consumables used in semiconductor wafer manufacturing. The company has a prior industrial presence in West Bengal through its former subsidiary, MCC PTA India Corp, which commissioned a purified terephthalic acid manufacturing plant in Haldia in 2000 before Mitsubishi exited the business in 2016.

To support its semiconductor ambitions, the West Bengal government is finalising a ₹5,000-crore investment promotion framework announced in its latest budget, which is also expected to include incentives for global capability centres and AI-focused data centres. Mitsubishi's delegation has separately held discussions with the Assam government on potential investments in that state's semiconductor and chemical engineering sectors, indicating the company is evaluating multiple locations before finalising its India investment decision.
