Himachal Pradesh CM lays foundation for North India's first green hydrogen plant

Power Generation  -  Feb 06,2025  -

Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu laid the foundation stone for North India’s first 1-MW green hydrogen plant in Dabhota, Solan district, on 05 February, 2025.

The plant will harness power from renewable sources to produce hydrogen through electrolysis using an alkaline potassium hydroxide solution as the electrolyte, which helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions significantly. With a production capacity of 423 kg of green hydrogen per day, the facility will require 13 litres of water per kg of hydrogen, drawn from underground reserves through tube wells.

The production process will consume approx. 52.01 units of electricity per kilogram, translating into an annual production of 1,54,395 kg of green hydrogen. This initiative aligns with the state government’s efforts to promote sustainable energy solutions and transition to a cleaner energy ecosystem.

The project, being developed by Himachal Pradesh Power Corporation (HPPCL) in collaboration with Oil India, is set to be completed at a cost of Rs 9.04 crore. The CM instructed officials to ensure the plant’s completion within one year.
