    The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs has approved a new Outer Harbor Project at a major port in Thoothukudi, comprising harbor infrastructure and container terminal expansion. The project includes breakwaters, rock bunds, wharfs, backup yard infrastructure, and two container terminals with 1,000 meter quay length each, capable of handling 4 to 5.2 Million TEUs. The project is currently at the approval stage with implementation to follow under Hybrid Annuity and DBFOT models.

    A tender has been issued to develop a second container terminal at a major port on the east coast, to be built under the Design, Build, Finance, Operate and Transfer (DBFOT) model with a 40-year concession period. The facility is planned to handle vessels up to 24,000 TEUs with a maximum length overall of 400 metres. The project is aimed at meeting rising export-import and transhipment demand in line with the Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047.

The port authority's board has approved the price bid for the roughly ₹2,000 crore project.

    A massive Rs. 85,000 million development is underway in Thoothukkudi to build four container berths with a 4 MTEU capacity. The project includes a 5.5 km breakwater and extensive dredging to accommodate 18m draught vessels. Spanning 2024 to 2031, it was submitted for state environmental clearance in April 2026 to transform the site into a major maritime hub.
