West Bengal Government Begins Land Identification for Kalyani Greenfield Airport Project, Nadia District
The West Bengal government has started the process of identifying land for the proposed Kalyani Greenfield Airport, intended to reduce congestion at Kolkata Airport and expand air connectivity across South Bengal. Around 2,000 acres of land spread across nine mouzas, including Kalyani and Birpara in Nadia district, have been identified for the project. The administration has temporarily suspended registration of land sale and purchase documents in these areas as part of the acquisition process.
The greenfield airport was announced in the state government's budget this year and is being modelled on the Navi Mumbai Greenfield Airport. The Detailed Project Report and construction schedule will be finalised once land acquisition and other administrative processes are completed.
Separately, West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari announced that the state government will sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Airports Authority of India (AAI) on 28th September for the development of four airports under the Centre's regional connectivity scheme, UDAN. These airports are proposed at Chharra in Purulia, Balurghat in South Dinajpur, Hasimara in Alipurduar, and Kalaikunda in West Midnapore. The state government will hand over the required land to AAI for execution of these projects.
Together, the initiatives mark a broader push to expand aviation infrastructure across West Bengal, spanning both a new greenfield facility near Kolkata and regional airport development under the UDAN scheme.
