GRSE Board Approves ₹2,896 Crore Greenfield Shipyard at Raichak, West Bengal
Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Ltd (GRSE), a Navratna defence public sector undertaking under the Ministry of Defence, has secured board approval for an investment of ₹2,896 crore to build a greenfield shipyard at Raichak in South 24 Parganas district, West Bengal.
The facility is being developed on a 32-acre riverside plot leased from Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port, Kolkata (SMPK), along the Hooghly river. The site has a 356-metre waterfront, a 96-metre jetty and a draught of 8–10 metres. Planned infrastructure includes a 200-metre dry dock, a slipway, a launching pad, jetties and block-fabrication facilities.
Once developed, the Raichak yard is designed to build warships up to 200 metres in length and commercial vessels of up to 60,000 deadweight tonnes (DWT), positioning it as a major shipbuilding hub for both naval and commercial construction.
The project forms part of a broader set of shipbuilding and defence-manufacturing expansion initiatives GRSE is undertaking in West Bengal, alongside facility upgrades at Shalimar and Kidderpore Docks. It aligns with the central government's shipbuilding revitalisation push and the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative aimed at strengthening India's domestic maritime construction capacity.
