Tata Steel has announced plans to invest ₹10,000 crore across its Jharkhand projects by 2028, aimed at expanding its steelmaking capacity and adopting low-emission production technologies. The investment is expected to generate around 2,000 direct and indirect jobs.

Of the total outlay, approximately ₹7,000 crore will be allocated to the deployment of HIsarna and Easy Melting Technology. HIsarna is Tata Steel's proprietary low-carbon ironmaking process that eliminates the need for conventional coke ovens, sinter plants and pellet plants, reducing carbon emissions in steelmaking.

The remaining investment includes ₹2,600 crore for expansion of the company's Tinplate Division and ₹1,500 crore for its Combi Mill operations. These projects are intended to strengthen Tata Steel's manufacturing capabilities in Jharkhand, where the company operates an 11 MTPA steel plant at Jamshedpur and a 1 MTPA facility at Gamharia.

The Jharkhand investments form part of Tata Steel's broader strategy to raise its steelmaking capacity in India from the current 27.35 MTPA to 40 MTPA, through a combination of capacity augmentation and transition to lower-emission steelmaking routes. The company's consolidated steelmaking capacity currently stands at over 36 MTPA across India, the Netherlands and Thailand, with a long-term target of exceeding 50 million tonnes, with most of the additional capacity of over 12 MT planned in India.
