Suzlon Signs MoU for ₹500 Crore Renewable Energy Investment in Tamil Nadu
Suzlon, a company specialising in green energy equipment, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Tamil Nadu government proposing an investment of ₹500 crore in the state, expected to create around 500 jobs. The MoU was signed during a recent event in Chennai, with the investment planned across Coimbatore and Thoothukudi.
Tamil Nadu's Industries Minister S Keerthana clarified in the state Assembly that the proposed Tamil Nadu investment is unconnected to a separate Suzlon groundbreaking ceremony held in Andhra Pradesh, following social media claims that the company had shifted its investment away from Tamil Nadu. The minister stated that the two developments are independent of each other.
Suzlon has had a long-standing business association with Tamil Nadu, having commenced production in the state in 2006 before halting operations there in 2011. During the intervening period, the company continued to support its sister concern, SE Forge, in the state. The company has now decided to resume direct investment in Tamil Nadu after the nine-year gap.
The renewed investment adds to Suzlon's broader activity in southern India, where the company has also been involved in renewable energy project development in Andhra Pradesh alongside Tata, as part of separate proposals in that state.
