NTPC Invites EOI for Grid-Connected Sodium-Ion Battery Energy Storage Pilot Project
NTPC Limited has invited an expression of interest (EoI) for setting up a pilot project to develop and install a grid-connected battery energy storage system (BESS) based on sodium-ion battery technology. The project will be implemented at existing NTPC thermal power stations or office buildings, with the bid submission deadline set for October 15, 2026.
Applicants can propose either a 100 kWh usable energy capacity BESS or a capacity based on their own standard configuration suited to a demonstration scale. The scope of work covers design, engineering, manufacturing, supply, installation, testing and commissioning of the complete sodium-ion BESS, including the battery management system, power conversion system, energy management system, switchgear and auxiliary systems.
The scope also includes integration with the existing electrical system at the point of interconnection, along with associated control, communication, protection, metering, safety and fire-protection systems. The selected applicant will additionally provide three years of annual maintenance from commissioning, demonstrate key performance parameters, secure statutory approvals, share operating and technical data, and train NTPC personnel.
NTPC will provide the land required for installation within its premises, along with access to the nearest 415V low-tension switchgear for charging, discharging and auxiliary power needs. The company will also facilitate statutory clearances and support operation, maintenance, and performance data collection for the pilot.
