Power Generation Jul 13,2026

NTPC Limited's Board of Directors, at its meeting held on July 11, 2026, approved an investment proposal for the Lara Super Thermal Power Project, Stage-III, comprising two units of 800 MW each, at a current estimated cost of ₹20,456.70 crore. The approval expands NTPC's thermal power generation capacity by 1,600 MW.

The Lara Super Thermal Power Station is located in Chhattisgarh's Raigarh district. The Stage-III expansion adds two 800 MW generating units to the existing station, taking forward NTPC's capacity addition plans as India's power consumption continues to rise on the back of economic growth, urbanisation and expanding industrial activity.

Based on the approved capacity and cost, the investment works out to approximately ₹12.79 crore per MW. NTPC did not disclose the project's commissioning timeline or funding structure in its exchange filing.

The investment is part of NTPC's broader expansion strategy across thermal, renewable and hydro power projects, aimed at ensuring energy security while supporting the integration of a growing share of renewable capacity into India's electricity grid. Large thermal projects such as Lara Stage-III continue to provide stable baseload power as intermittent renewable generation increases across the grid.
