IMFA Inaugurates 100,000 TPA Greenfield Ferro Chrome Plant at Kalinganagar, Odisha, Taking Total Capacity Beyond 500,000 TPA
Indian Metals & Ferro Alloys Ltd (IMFA) has commissioned its greenfield ferro chrome expansion at Kalinganagar in Jajpur district, Odisha. The plant was inaugurated by Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on October 14, 2026. It has begun hot metal tapping, about 15 months after groundbreaking in May 2025. The plant has two 33 MVA furnaces and an annual capacity of 100,000 tonnes.
The facility is spread over 124.26 acres. The project cost was reported at ₹800 crore at the groundbreaking. The plant uses closed furnaces, captive power recovery and renewable energy. IMFA has a tie-up with JSW Green Energy for hybrid renewable power for the plant’s smelting operations.
IMFA acquired Tata Steel’s ferro chrome plant at Kalinganagar for ₹707.26 crore, completed on February 27, 2026. That plant has four furnaces and a capacity of 100,000 tonnes per annum. A fifth furnace is expected by early 2027 and would lift it to 150,000 tonnes per annum.
With the new greenfield plant, IMFA’s total capacity goes beyond 500,000 tonnes per annum. The company is now India’s largest producer of value-added ferro chrome, which is used mainly in stainless steel production. Kalinganagar is near IMFA’s captive chrome ore mines at Sukinda and Mahagiri, with access to Paradeep Port for domestic and export markets.
