Hitachi Energy India Limited has announced an investment of approximately ₹2,000 crore to set up a new Large Power Transformer (LPT) factory at Karjan, near Vadodara in Gujarat. The facility will add to the company's existing footprint of power, dry distribution and traction transformer plants in Gujarat, alongside its transformer insulation and components factories in Mysore and Halol.

The new plant is scheduled for completion in FY28 and is expected to generate more than 1,000 direct and indirect jobs. It will manufacture power transformers aimed at faster delivery of grid equipment, supporting applications such as high-voltage transmission, HVDC systems, power generation, AI data centres, and large-scale industrial use.

The Karjan facility is planned as a LEED-certified site with a focus on energy efficiency and reduced environmental impact. It will be developed as a fully digital plant integrating smart manufacturing technologies and end-to-end digital connectivity.

The investment comes amid rising demand for transmission infrastructure in India. A Central Electricity Authority estimate cited in connection with the announcement points to a requirement of ₹7.93 lakh crore in transmission infrastructure investment to integrate over 900 GW of non-fossil fuel-based energy capacity by 2035, underscoring the need for greater domestic manufacturing capacity for large power transformers.
