Himadri Specialty Chemicals to Build India's First Carbon Nanotube Facility in West Bengal at ₹70 Crore
Himadri Specialty Chemicals Ltd. has announced it will build India's first carbon nanotube (CNT) production facility at its existing integrated manufacturing complex in West Bengal. The project, expected to cost around ₹70 crore, will have an initial production capacity of 200 tonnes per annum, with commercial manufacturing targeted to begin by the fourth quarter of FY2027.
The facility will produce carbon nanotubes developed through the company's in-house research and development programme. Carbon nanotubes are used as conductive materials in lithium-ion batteries, electric vehicles, aerospace components, semiconductors and electronics, valued for their electrical conductivity, mechanical strength and lightweight properties.
Alongside the CNT project, Himadri has disclosed plans to expand its existing super specialty carbon black (SSCB) manufacturing capacity, with an investment of over ₹170 crore. This expansion is expected to be completed by Q4 FY2028. SSCB products are used in lithium-ion batteries, engineered plastics, conductive polymers, fibres and coatings.
Both projects form part of Himadri's broader strategy to reduce India's reliance on imported nanomaterials and advanced battery materials, strengthen the domestic specialty chemicals ecosystem, and support the growth of India's electric mobility, clean energy and advanced manufacturing sectors.
