GEON Commissions 2.88 GWh Battery Energy Storage System at Khavda, Gujarat
GEON, the future technologies division of Kabra Extrusiontechnik, has completed integration and commissioning of a 2.88 GWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) at Khavda in Gujarat. The project was executed within five months and is now fully commercially operational.
The installation forms part of the expanding renewable energy infrastructure at Khavda, which is developing into one of India's key clean energy hubs. GEON's scope of work covered system integration, execution, testing and commissioning of the BESS.
The project also involved integration of Power Conditioning Systems, transformers and Energy Management Systems as part of the overall storage setup. GEON delivered the project as the nodal agency, coordinating engineering and on-site execution teams to complete the full scope within the stated timeline.
The Khavda BESS is described as among India's largest utility-scale battery storage deployments to date. The project reflects the increasing role of battery storage in supporting grid balancing and dispatchable clean power as the country's renewable energy capacity expands.
GEON has indicated plans for domestic manufacturing of BESS, including a proposed gigafactory to support future demand for energy storage equipment in India. The company's existing portfolio spans lithium-ion battery packs for two-wheelers, three-wheelers, four-wheelers and off-road vehicles, alongside BESS, inverter batteries, telecom backup and commercial and industrial storage solutions.
