Cochin Shipyard, Swan Defence Get National Shipbuilding Mission Nod for Brownfield Expansion
Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) and Swan Defence and Heavy Industries (SDHI) have secured in-principle approval from the National Shipbuilding Mission for brownfield expansion of their shipbuilding facilities, under the government's Shipbuilding Development Scheme (SbDS). The approvals form part of India's broader push to strengthen domestic shipbuilding capacity.
Cochin Shipyard, the state-run shipbuilder, plans to set up a ₹4,000 crore block fabrication facility in Kochi through a joint venture with South Korea's HD Hyundai Heavy Industries Co Ltd. The facility will be built on land leased from the Cochin Port Authority, adjacent to the company's existing flagship shipyard.
Swan Defence and Heavy Industries will expand its facility at Pipavav in Gujarat, utilising 75 acres of land adjoining its existing offshore fabrication yard. The company said environmental studies for the expansion are already underway, after which a consultant will be appointed to conduct a full study for the planned Phase 2 expansion.
The approvals add to a string of recent shipbuilding sector developments under the SbDS, including in-principle approval for a greenfield shipbuilding cluster in Porbandar and a ₹1,570 crore ship repair facility at Vadinar, both in Gujarat, reflecting sustained government focus on expanding India's shipbuilding and ship repair infrastructure.
