Cochin Shipyard Allotted 127 Acres at VOC Port, Thoothukudi, for ₹280 Crore Hybrid Shipyard
Cochin Shipyard Ltd has paid ₹280 crore towards land for its proposed hybrid shipyard at the VO Chidambaranar (VOC) Port in Thoothukudi. The facility will be spread across 110.14 acres of land and 17.29 acres of waterfront, totalling around 127 acres, and is planned in three phases through December 2027.
The company has received the allotment letter from the VOC Port Authority, as disclosed in its investor presentation submitted to the stock exchanges on September 10. Under the phased allotment, 62.18 acres will be handed over this month, followed by 41.96 acres by April 2027 and the remaining six acres by December 2027.
The facility is structured as a brownfield capacity expansion under the Shipbuilding Development Scheme and will undertake shipbuilding, ship repair and offshore fabrication. It is located adjacent to a larger greenfield shipbuilding cluster planned at Thoothukudi.
The broader cluster is being developed through National Shipbuilding & Heavy Industries Park Tamil Nadu Ltd (NSHIP-TN), a 50:50 joint venture between VOC Port and SIPCOT, following an MoU signed in September 2025. Separately, NSHIP-TN, South Korea's HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering (HD KSOE) and Sagarmala Finance Corporation signed an MoU in April 2026 for a proposed greenfield shipyard at Thoothukudi with an annual capacity of 2.5 million gross tonnes.
