Coal India Commissions 200 MW of 300 MW Solar Power Project at Khavda, Gujarat
Coal India Limited (CIL) has commissioned 200 MW of solar power capacity under its 300 MW Solar Power Project at Khavda, Gujarat. In a regulatory filing to the stock exchanges, the company said it received the commissioning certificate from the Gujarat Energy Development Agency (GEDA) dated July 15, 2026.
The Khavda project is located at the Khavda Renewable Energy Park in Gujarat's Kutch district, one of the world's largest renewable energy zones. With 200 MW now commissioned, the remaining 100 MW of the project's planned capacity is yet to be brought online.
The commissioning marks a step in Coal India's broader push to diversify beyond coal mining into renewable energy generation. The company has separately secured a Letter of Award for a larger 600 MW (2×300 MW) solar power project at Jalaun Solar Park in Uttar Pradesh, at a tariff of ₹2.73/kWh and an estimated investment of ₹2,831.11 crore, which it plans to complete within 18 months of signing the power purchase agreement.
Coal India has previously faced scrutiny over the pace of its renewable energy rollout; a target set in 2015 to develop 1,000 MW of capacity by March 2019 saw only 122 MW installed by December 2024, with much of the remaining pipeline pushed to 2027-28. The commissioning of the Khavda capacity represents a step toward reviving the company's clean energy expansion plans as it works toward a longer-term target of 3,000 MW of solar capacity.
