CCEA Approves ₹17,167 Crore Outer Harbour Project at VO Chidambaranar Port, Thoothukudi, with Two Container Terminals
The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) has approved the Outer Harbour Project at VO Chidambaranar Port in Thoothukudi. The estimated project cost is ₹17,167 crore.
The harbour infrastructure will be taken up under the Hybrid Annuity Model at an estimated ₹11,733 crore. Container terminal expansion (Phases 1 and 2) will be carried out under the Design, Build, Finance, Operate and Transfer (DBFOT) model at an estimated ₹5,434 crore.
The project includes breakwaters, rock bunds, wharfs and backup yard infrastructure. It also includes two container terminals, each with 1,000 metres of quay length. The terminals will have a capacity of 4 to 5.2 million TEUs.
The project will add new harbour infrastructure and container terminal capacity at the port. It is expected to support maritime trade, port capacity and logistics activity in the region. The source does not name contractors or concessionaires, or give a construction timeline.
