Bondada Engineering Wins NTPC REL Order for India's Largest 100 MWh Vanadium Flow Battery Project in Khavda, Gujarat
Bondada Engineering Limited has received a Notification of Award from NTPC Renewable Energy Limited (NTPC REL) for the Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) of a 16.7 MW/100 MWh Vanadium Redox Flow Battery Energy Storage System (VRFB BESS) at Khavda Solar Park in Gujarat. The order also includes 10 years of operations and maintenance following commissioning. The project was tendered in February 2026 and awarded roughly five months later.
The project will be executed with Delectrik Systems Private Limited serving as technology partner. It is being described as India's first and largest grid-scale VRFB energy storage project, with the system to be designed, engineered and manufactured entirely in India. Project facilities are expected to be completed within 10 months of the Notification of Award, covering the full EPC scope.
The project uses Vanadium Redox Flow Battery technology, which the company said offers advantages over conventional Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) systems, including a service life of over 25 years compared to 12-15 years for LFP batteries, along with stable performance under repeated cycling and reduced long-term operating costs. India's domestic vanadium resources are expected to help reduce long-term import dependence for the technology, aligning with the government's indigenous energy security goals.
The award marks Bondada Engineering's entry into next-generation Long Duration Energy Storage (LDES) technologies and strengthens its position in India's expanding battery energy storage market. The Hyderabad-based company has an existing presence across the renewable energy, telecom and railway infrastructure sectors. The project comes as the Indian government targets deployment of approximately 236 GWh of battery energy storage capacity by 2030, against current installed capacity of about 3.3 GWh.
