BMW Industries Commissions Colour-Coated Steel Line at Bokaro as Part of ₹800 Crore Expansion in Jharkhand
Kolkata-based BMW Industries has commissioned a new colour-coated steel line at Bokaro in Jharkhand. The line is part of the company’s ongoing ₹800 crore expansion plan at Bokaro, which is aimed at special steel products. It is the first phase of the company’s greenfield downstream steel complex.
The downstream steel complex has a planned capacity of 5 lakh tonnes. The company said more coated capacity lines will come online in the near future under this project.
The colour-coating line has been set up under the government’s Production Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme for Speciality Steel. The steel ministry launched the scheme in 2021 with an outlay of ₹6,322 crore. Its first round promotes value-added steel grades.
BMW Industries has so far made steel coils, sheets, pipes and TMT rebars. Colour-coated steel is a pre-painted product with a metallic and organic coating for corrosion resistance. The company expects demand from infrastructure, construction, consumer goods, automobile, renewables and defence. It currently serves the domestic market and may explore exports later.
Between January and March 2026, BMW Industries entered a partnership with Indian Oil Corporation Ltd to supply Piped Natural Gas (PNG) to the Bokaro plant. The source gives no capacity for the colour-coating line and no timeline for the remaining phases.
