₹1,667 Crore Srinagar Airport Civil Enclave Expansion to Complete by 2031, Katra Airport Feasibility Also Proposed
The proposed expansion of Srinagar International Airport's Civil Enclave, involving an estimated investment of ₹1,667 crore, is expected to substantially increase the passenger-handling capacity of Kashmir's main airport. The details were submitted by the Government of Jammu and Kashmir to the Ministry of Home Affairs as part of an assessment of civil aviation infrastructure and future connectivity needs in the region.
The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs approved the Civil Enclave development proposal on February 24, 2026, at the estimated cost of ₹1,667 crore. The project envisages construction of a new Integrated Terminal Building with a total built-up area of 71,500 square metres, designed to handle 2,900 passengers during peak hours and an annual capacity of one crore passengers.
The project has an estimated implementation period of 48 months and is currently under the tendering process, with completion expected by 2031. The expanded terminal is intended to address rising passenger traffic, particularly during the peak tourist season, and to reduce congestion while strengthening Srinagar's position as Kashmir's principal aviation gateway.
Alongside the Srinagar expansion, the J&K government has also proposed examining the feasibility of developing an airport or alternative aviation facility at Katra, the base for pilgrims travelling to the Mata Vaishno Devi shrine. The proposal calls for a techno-economic and environmental feasibility study covering terrain, land availability, aviation safety requirements, environmental impact, passenger projections and connectivity with existing road and rail networks, as a first step before any decision on construction. No airport construction at Katra has been approved at this stage.
