Uttarakhand Cabinet Clears 25-Year, 1,320 MW Power Purchase Agreement with Adani Power
The Uttarakhand Cabinet, headed by Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, has approved the Uttarakhand Power Corporation Limited (UPCL) signing a 1,320 MW base-load power purchase agreement with Adani Power Limited. The agreement carries a tariff of ₹5.746 per unit and runs for a contract period of 25 years.
The purchase agreement includes procurement of 1,234 MW of contracted generation capacity from coal-based power. The approval was among 18 proposals cleared by the Cabinet covering employment, electricity, health, urban planning and employee welfare.
The long-term procurement arrangement is aimed at strengthening Uttarakhand's power availability and providing greater supply certainty as electricity consumption rises across households, businesses, public services and industrial establishments in the state. Officials noted that while Uttarakhand has significant hydropower potential, its electricity requirements vary considerably across seasons and regions, and long-duration agreements of this kind can help the state manage periods when local generation is insufficient to meet demand.
The agreement is expected to support more stable power planning for distribution utilities as well as industrial and commercial consumers in the state, amid rising demand driven by economic activity, urbanisation, tourism and industrial development.
