Tamil Nadu Government To Set Up ₹300 Crore, 400-Bed Multi-Super Speciality Hospital In Perambur, Chennai
The Tamil Nadu government has announced the establishment of a 400-bed multi-super speciality hospital in Perambur, Chennai, at an estimated investment of ₹300 crore. Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay made the announcement in the state Assembly under Rule 110, as part of a broader set of measures to strengthen healthcare infrastructure across the state.
The proposed hospital, to be built in the Chief Minister's own Perambur constituency, is aimed at providing high-quality specialised medical services to residents of North Chennai, where access to advanced government healthcare has been a long-standing gap. The facility is intended to be of international standard.
North Chennai currently relies on Government Stanley Medical College and Hospital for tertiary care, which faces a heavy patient load, with specialised cases often referred to the Government Multi Super Specialty Hospital at Omandurar or the Kalaignar Centenary Super Specialty Hospital, both located farther from the area. The new Perambur facility is expected to reduce travel distances for patients seeking specialised treatment.
The Federation of North Chennai Residents Welfare Associations (FNCRWA) welcomed the announcement, noting that a high-end hospital in the area had been a long-pending demand that the federation had repeatedly raised with government officials and departments.
The hospital announcement was made alongside other healthcare measures, including a five-fold increase in the annual coverage under the Chief Minister's Comprehensive Health Insurance Scheme, raised from ₹5 lakh to ₹25 lakh. No construction timeline has been disclosed for the Perambur hospital project.
