Tamil Nadu CM lays foundation stone for Sembcorp's green ammonia plant

Infrastructure  -  Aug 22,2024  -

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin laid the foundation stone of 28 industrial projects with a total investment of Rs 51,157 crore and inaugurated 19 additional projects with an investment of Rs 17,616 crore.

The biggest of them was a green ammonia plant to be built by Singapore-based energy producer Sembcorp Industries for Rs 36,238 crore.

The plant, which is coming up in the southern state’s port city of Tuticorin, will export zero-emission fuel to Japan and is expecting to produce 200,000 tonnes of green ammonia per annum.

The company said in a statement that Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha will oversee the maritime transportation of green ammonia from India to Japan.

“Tamil Nadu was the pioneer in wind energy; now it is set to be the pioneer in hydrogen as well. Our investment in the state reflects the deep relationship between India, Singapore and Japan,” said Vipul Thuli, chief executive officer (South Asia), Hydrogen Business, SembCorp Industries.
