SJVN Commissions Second 660 MW Unit, Completes 1,320 MW Buxar Thermal Power Project in Bihar
SJVN Chairman and Managing Director Bhupender Gupta has commemorated the commercial operation of Unit-II (660 MW) of the 1,320 MW Buxar Thermal Power Project (BTPP) at Chausa in Buxar district, Bihar. With this, both 660 MW units of the plant are now in commercial operation, taking the project to its full 1,320 MW capacity. The project is being implemented by SJVN Thermal Private Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of SJVN.
Unit-II achieved commercial operation on September 12, 2026, following the commissioning of Unit-I in November 2025. The plant uses supercritical technology, which SJVN states delivers higher efficiency and a reduced environmental footprint compared to conventional coal-fired units. The completed project is designed to generate 9,828.72 million units of electricity annually, with 85% of the power allocated to Bihar under a long-term Power Purchase Agreement.
At the project site, Gupta inaugurated the plant's Centralized Control Room and inspected key operational facilities, including the Ash Dyke, to review operational preparedness. SJVN Director (Projects) Rajesh Kumar Chandel was also present at the event.
During the visit, SJVN officials met Bihar's Secretary (Energy) Ajay Yadav and Buxar District Magistrate Sahila to discuss matters including land acquisition, CSR activities, pumped storage projects (PSP), power purchase agreement issues, availability of renewable power with SJVN, and potential further investment opportunities in Bihar. SJVN said the completed Buxar project will support power availability in Bihar and the Eastern Region, including during peak-hour demand.
