Shyam Steel Breaks Ground on ₹15,000 Crore Expansion, Including ₹10,000 Crore Integrated Steel Plant in Bankura
West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari laid the foundation stone for Shyam Steel Group's expansion project at its Mejia plant in Bankura district, marking one of the largest private industrial investment announcements in the state in recent years. The company has announced a total investment of ₹15,000 crore, including a ₹10,000 crore, 2 million-tonne-per-annum (MTPA) integrated steel plant.
The proposed integrated steel plant will comprise a Direct Reduced Iron (DRI) unit, a pellet and beneficiation plant, a steel melting shop and a high-speed rolling mill for manufacturing TMT bars and structural steel. Upon completion, the project is expected to raise Shyam Steel's finished steel production capacity from 1.5 MTPA to 3.5 MTPA, and is projected to create more than 20,000 direct and indirect jobs.
Beyond the core steel project, the group has earmarked an additional ₹5,000 crore for diversification into defence manufacturing, aviation, industrial townships, fabrication, paints and coatings, construction chemicals, engineering and infrastructure. The broader investment plan spans the Bankura, Purulia, Paschim Bardhaman and Birbhum regions of West Bengal.
Established in 1953 and headquartered in Kolkata, Shyam Steel currently has an annual turnover of over ₹10,000 crore and employs more than 25,000 people, supplying steel to major infrastructure projects executed by agencies including NHAI, Indian Railways, AAI, IOC, ONGC and BHEL. Company director Lalit Beriwala said the investment reflects the group's long-term commitment to West Bengal's industrial resurgence. The project forms part of the state government's broader claim of having attracted over ₹28,000 crore in investments and investment proposals within two-and-a-half months of the current administration taking office.
