Petronet LNG to Set Up 10 CBG Plants in ₹1,200 Crore JV with Gruner Renewable Energy
Petronet LNG Limited's board of directors, at a meeting held on September 17, 2026, approved a proposal to incorporate a 50:50 joint venture company with Gruner Renewable Energy Private Limited. The new private limited company will construct, operate and establish 10 Compressed Bio-Gas (CBG) plants across the country.
Each of the planned CBG plants will have a production capacity of 18 metric tonnes per day. The project carries an estimated total capital outlay of ₹1,200 crore, marking a diversification move for Petronet LNG, India's largest LNG importer, into the renewable energy and waste-to-energy space.
Petronet said further details regarding the proposed joint venture company will be communicated to the stock exchanges once the entity is formally incorporated.
The move follows Petronet's broader capex push in recent years, including an earlier board approval for a ₹20,685 crore petrochemical plant at Dahej, Gujarat, and plans for a new LNG import facility in Odisha involving an investment of ₹6,355 crore. CBG projects align with the government's Sustainable Alternative Towards Affordable Transportation (SATAT) initiative, which aims to expand India's compressed biogas production capacity using agricultural, industrial and municipal waste as feedstock.
