ONGC Gets Environmental Clearance to Drill 600 New Oil and Gas Wells Across North Gujarat

The Mehsana Asset of Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) has received environmental clearance from the Central Government for the drilling of 600 new oil and gas wells across four districts of North Gujarat. The approval covers onshore developmental drilling and hydrocarbon production activities in 37 Petroleum Mining Lease (PML) blocks spread across Mehsana, Patan, Gandhinagar, and Ahmedabad districts.

The clearance was issued on 25 May 2026 after evaluation under the Environmental Impact Assessment Notification of September 2006. The project covers onshore developmental drilling and production from the 600 identified wells across the PML blocks.

The clearance is expected to support an increase in domestic crude oil and natural gas output from the region. No specific investment figure was disclosed in connection with the project, though the scale of drilling activity is expected to draw associated capital spending on drilling rigs, well infrastructure, and support services.

Following the clearance, ONGC is expected to begin site preparation and associated infrastructure work for the drilling programme in the coming months, with related activity expected to generate demand for transportation, construction, and engineering support services in the region.
