NTPC Subsidiary PVUNL Declares Commercial Operations for 800 MW Unit-2 at Patratu Thermal Power Project, Jharkhand

Power Generation Jun 24,2026

Patratu Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Limited (PVUNL), a subsidiary of NTPC Limited, has declared the Commercial Operation Date (COD) for Unit-2 (800 MW) of its Patratu Super Thermal Power Project (STPP) in Jharkhand, effective June 25, 2026.

The unit uses supercritical technology and is part of the project's Phase 1, which comprises three units of 800 MW each for a total capacity of 2,400 MW. PVUNL is structured as a joint venture between NTPC, which holds a 74 per cent stake, and Jharkhand Bijli Vitran Nigam Limited (JBVNL), which holds the remaining 26 per cent.

With the COD declaration, the unit transitions from trial operation to commercial generation, allowing NTPC to begin recognising revenue from power sales under long-term power purchase agreements. The Patratu project is intended to meet a significant share of Jharkhand's power demand, reducing the state's dependence on power exchange purchases.

The addition takes NTPC's consolidated commercial capacity past the 76 GW mark, as the company continues working toward its target of 130 GW of capacity by 2032. Remaining units under Patratu's Phase 1 are expected to be commissioned in subsequent phases.
