NTPC-NPCIL JV Floats ₹28,000 Crore Nuclear Island EPC Tender for 2.8 GW Mahi Banswara Plant, Rajasthan
Anushakti Vidhyut Nigam Limited (ASHVINI), the joint venture between NTPC Limited and Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL), has invited bids for the Nuclear Island Mega EPC Package of the Mahi Banswara Rajasthan Atomic Power Project. The tender, estimated at over ₹28,000 crore, covers the reactor buildings, nuclear structures, heavy water upgrading plant, water systems and waste management facilities for the project's four units.
The Mahi Banswara plant will comprise four indigenous 700 MW Pressurised Heavy Water Reactors (PHWRs), taking total capacity to 2,800 MW. It will be the first nuclear power plant in India not fully owned by NPCIL, with NTPC holding a 49% stake in the joint venture and NPCIL the remainder. Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for the project in September 2025.
The plant site spans more than 1,300 acres on the right bank of the Mahi river, upstream of the Mahi Bajaj Sagar dam. The selected contractor for the EPC package will handle engineering, design, procurement, civil construction, installation, testing and commissioning of the nuclear island systems. NPCIL has described the package as the largest Nuclear Island EPC tender floated under India's indigenous PHWR programme.
The project supports the central government's target of reaching 100 GW of nuclear power capacity by 2047, as nuclear energy currently accounts for about 3% of India's total electricity generation. The first of the four Mahi Banswara reactors is expected to begin commercial operation by 2031, with the remaining three units to follow at six-month intervals.
