The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) has successfully acquired 360 hectares of land for the highly anticipated Virar-Alibaug Multimodal Corridor (VAMMC) project.
This major infrastructure initiative will include an expressway featuring between 8 to 14 lanes, connecting the districts of Raigad, Thane, and Palghar.
An MSRDC representative stated, “Our goal is to secure a total of 1,000 hectares for the VAMMC project, and we have already acquired 360 hectares. We are diligently working to acquire the remaining land and expect to complete this process soon.”
Regarding the project's timeline, the official revealed that a proposal for bond issuance has been submitted to the state government. Construction will begin once the proposal is approved. Initially proposed by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) in 2011, the project was transferred to MSRDC in September 2020.
As of June 2021, the project has received environmental clearance for an 18-kilometre segment between Chirner and Balvali. The development is expected to involve the removal of approximately 5,000 trees and the diversion of 221 hectares of forest land.
