Maharashtra Government Approves BMC's ₹3,000 Crore, 8.48 Km Underground Water Tunnel Project in Mumbai
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has received Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) clearance for its proposed 8.48 km underground water tunnel, clearing the way for construction to begin. The tunnel, with a diameter of 2.7 metres, will carry treated water from the Dharavi Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) through Ghatkopar to the Bhandup water treatment plant.
The project is estimated to cost ₹3,000 crore and will have the capacity to convey 416 million litres per day (MLD) of treated water, helping secure supply to Mumbai's central and eastern suburbs.
The tunnel forms part of a larger BMC initiative involving seven sewage treatment plants across the city, with a combined outlay of ₹27,309 crore, aimed at improving wastewater treatment and reducing water losses from leakage and theft, which currently account for a significant share of the city's daily water supply shortfall.
With environmental and coastal regulatory approvals now in place, construction work on the tunnel is expected to commence shortly, using tunnel boring machinery for the underground alignment.
