Kerala Water Authority to Float ₹523 Crore Tender for 190 MLD Water Treatment Plant in Aluva
The Kerala Water Authority (KWA) is set to invite tenders within two months for the establishment of a 190 million litres per day (MLD) water treatment plant in Aluva. The project carries an outlay of ₹523 crore and is funded by the Asian Development Bank (ADB).
The facility is intended to address Kochi's growing drinking water needs and has been designed to meet projected supply demands up to 2050. The new plant will come up within KWA's existing compound in Aluva, roughly 200 metres from the current plants, and water will be sourced from the Periyar river.
Construction is expected to be completed within 15 months of award, and the company selected for the project will also handle operations and maintenance for five years thereafter.
Kochi's water requirements are currently served by four plants in Aluva along with a 100-MLD plant in Maradu, together providing a production capacity of about 225 MLD against a demand of 260 MLD. This shortfall of 49 MLD is projected to widen to 80 MLD by 2050, underscoring the need for the new capacity addition.
