JSW Projects and COEP Technological University Sign MoU for ₹800 Crore Battery Cell R&D Centre at Chikhali Research Park, Pune
JSW Projects, a JSW Group company, and COEP Technological University have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish an Advanced Research and Development (R&D) Centre in Pune. The estimated total investment is ₹800 crore. The centre will be developed at the university's Chikhali Research Park.
The project is a two-phase programme to set up a cell research and development centre. It will include a cell validation centre and a platform for battery prototyping and pilot-scale development.
Phase I will focus on designing, simulating and prototyping indigenous lithium-ion and other advanced chemistry cells, including sodium-ion batteries. Phase II will scale the facility into a cell validation centre capable of producing cells with capacities from 100 Ah to 600 Ah.
The centre is intended to bring university research and industrial application onto a common platform. It is expected to support applications in electric mobility, grid-scale battery energy storage and clean energy. It will also build capabilities in battery research, engineering and manufacturing. The source does not state a construction timeline or the split of investment between phases.
